Miscellaneous Biology Sites

The Aquatic Network - Information Service for the Aquatic World. Subject areas covered include aquaculture, conservation, fisheries, limnology, marine science and oceanography, maritime heritage, ocean engineering, and seafood. Subjects break down into categories including associations, education, products and services, and publications. Most sub-categories break down by country. This is a very thorough site.

Audubon On-line Field Guides - This is an amazing site. The meat of the site are the twelve categories of species. Including not just the standard amphibian, reptiles, but also, seashells, butterflies and wildflowers. You can explore any of the 12 categories and then select from a sub-category or opt to view all the animals within that species type. If you continue to click you will come upon a full description of the species, including a picture, description, voice, habitat, nesting habits and interesting discussions about that species. Each field guide also includes either a map of where it can be found, or links to additional information. The site also features an "ask the expert" section and has field tips.

The Bacteria Museum - This interesting site contains everything you want to know about bacteria. Continually updated, this site begins with what bacteria is and discusses evolution, mutation, pathogenic bacteria, food safety, how to fight bacteria and much more. All explanations are cross-referenced with hyperlinks.

Biodiversity and Biological Collections - "Devoted to information of interest to systematists and other biologists of the organismic kind. Within these pages you will find information about specimens in biological collections, taxonomic authority files, directories of biologists, the Delta system and links for hundreds of biodiversity and collection resources."

The Complete Works of Charles Darwin - The largest collection of writings by and about Darwin ever published. It contains his complete publications, thousands of handwritten manuscripts and the largest Darwin bibliography and manuscript catalogue.

Ducks Unlimited - Wetland ecology, conservation and restoration information.

Fact Sheets and News Releases on Threatened and Endangered Species - This site was created through the joint effort of the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Sea World/Busch Gardens (SW/BG), World Wildlife Fund, and EE-Link. It provides factual information about many species that are threatened or endangered.

OceanLink - A Marine Science information page. A fun and easily understandable site with resources, facts, records, news and information all about the ocean and ocean life.

PLoS Biology - Try this Open Access biology journal that the Public Library of Science publishes. It " features works of exceptional significance in all areas of biological science, from molecules to ecosystems, including works at the interface with other disciplines, such as chemistry, medicine, and mathematics."

SCIRUS for scientific information only - A comprehensive search engine devoted to science and by Elsevier Science. Good for finding peer-reviewed articles. Easy to use.
